Tree tips / Straight answers

How much does tree removal cost in Michigan?

The honest answer from a crew that quotes trees every week: it depends on the tree — but here is what actually moves the number, and the ranges most Mid-Michigan homeowners land in.

The short answer

Most tree removals in the Lansing area fall somewhere between a few hundred dollars for a small tree and a few thousand for a large one. As a rough guide: a small tree under 30 feet often runs $300–$800, a medium tree (30–60 feet) $500–$1,500, and a large tree over 60 feet $1,200–$3,000 or more. A tree that needs a crane, or one leaning over a house, sits at the top of that range. Every yard is different — which is why we quote every job free, in person, with a number that doesn’t change mid-job.

What makes the price go up or down?

Height and trunk size. A 90-foot pine is a different day of work than a crabapple. More wood means more cuts, more rigging, and more hauling.

What’s underneath it. A tree standing in an open yard can come down fast. A tree hanging over a roof, fence, garden or power line has to be roped down piece by piece — slower, more skill, higher price.

Access. If the bucket truck can park next to the tree, the job moves quickly. If the tree is behind a fence in a tight backyard, it becomes a climbing job.

What happens to the wood. Leaving the trunk bucked into firewood lengths costs less than having everything chipped and hauled away.

Does stump grinding cost extra?

Usually yes — removal quotes typically cover the tree down to a low stump. Grinding the stump below grade is a separate line, commonly $75–$400 depending on the diameter. It’s cheapest bundled with the removal, since the equipment is already on site. Batching several stumps at once prices better still.

Is storm damage work priced differently?

A tree that has already failed — on a roof, a shed, a car, or blocking a driveway — is urgent, and urgent work can carry a premium anywhere you call. Our approach: storm calls jump to the front of the line, and you still get a straight number before we start.

Why estimates should always be free

No one can price a tree honestly over the phone without seeing the drop zones, the access, and what’s underneath. Any company charging for an estimate, or quoting sight-unseen, is guessing with your money. We drive out, walk the job with you, and hand you the number on the spot.
